I shared a moment with him
The sky was dusking into a deep blue, and the street lights lit up the sidewalk. I had had my "Rock" playlist on since the morning, but felt the need for some softer ballads. Soon the melody of Tanaka Rie's "Fields of Hope" filled my ears, as I was walked home along the river, gazing at the gleaming reflections on the water. The chilly November air numbed my bare fingers. I tugged at my pink checkered scarf and wrapped it tighter around my neck. A sudden breeze lifted up the hem of my pleated school skirt, stabbing tiny ice daggers into my legs. I cursed Japanese schools for not allowing stockings with your winter uniform.
I looked down at the sidewalk right besides the riverbed and quietly contemplated whether I should go down there just to enjoy the night view for a few minutes. I shivered and immediately abandoned the idea.
Out of curiosity I looked down at the sidewalk once again when I noticed a boy about my age walking in the opposite direction. It was a simple glimpse at first but when he got closer I realised how attractive he was. I could not take my eyes off him.
いつか緑の朝へ
全ての夜を越えて
それはただ一人ずつ
(One day, to that green morning,
we'll cross through all these nights).
Unexpectedly he looked up at me. He caught my eye. I lingered on his glance. He didn't look away. My heart skipped a beat, then we walked past each other.
見つけて行く場所だから
(Because that is the place each one of us searches for...)
I knew I had shared a moment with him. It was so instantaneous yet the way it made me feel will forever have a place in my memory. I didn't turn back to look at him. I understood that moment I shared with him was already gone.
