The Evolution of Style - Part 3

There was never going to be a Part 3 but I recieved a lot of email for my last two posts, some of which made me laugh at myself stupidly. There were a lot of exasperations and "Mel! What on Earth are you wearing?!" I even had a friend ring me up and tell me that her friend, who I also happen to be acquainted with said that, "Mel's style is really... *insert all kinds of vomiting smileys*" LoL Although strangely enough, I also had a lot of people saying they loved the old style and even asked for exact shop locations. I don't mind either way because whatever I post up I'm prepared that people would judge, and besides everyone has a different idea on style, and that's what makes fashion exciting. Having said that... although it was in the past I almost feel that I've revealed something that I don't want to be judged on. It's not just about the clothes or the style, but it's about the story behind it. As a teenager, especially during the mid-teen years life can be very confusing. I feel that each piece of clothing I've bought, every outfit in the photos I've posted reflects on a time period for me which can still tie knots inside my stomach. I am by nature a very sentimental person and I'm fond of all the memories I have from my high school years, no matter how bad they were. After all, it's those memories that have shaped this person who is able to survive and go to school in a foreign country with no language skills, family or friends and having to completely abide to another family's rules (can anyone say 7pm curfew? -_-;;)

So in a way, those photos, those outfits are like little treasures from my past, and as much as I want to make fun of them (which I did by posting the horrors for the world to see) I also want to cherish them. So I guess the whole point of this post was just to clear up the fact that my last two entries weren't just about fashion disasters and massive pic whoring. I wonder if the slightly older readers can think back to their teenage years and remember the stories behind all the various outfits they wore? I'm sure it'll bring a smile to their face =)

Edit: I also recieved a few emails asking who my style icon was, so I'll reply here rather than individually (Mel=lazy). I personally think Sienna Miller, Nicole Richie, Mischa Barton and Kate Moss are overrated. I mean even the infamous homless chic twins have been iconized. It's not that they don't have great outfits from time to time (I certainly loved Sienna during her mod stage) but it's the fact that they don't have fun with their clothes. It's not inspiring.

So without further bashing other people's style icons, I will say that my style icon is Gwen Stefani. I think she is one of the few celebrities who really appreciates everything fashion has to offer. It's not just about big sunglasses, lacy chiffon tops, skinny legs and Fendi Spy's, it's about different cultures, subcultures and styles. My style these days have been influenced by Gwen and is a mix of everything and hopfully I can also imitate the poise and elegance she posesses.
