The 78th Annual Academy Awards
Have you ever had one of those days when you’ve had an absolute blast with your friends and you can’t wait to tell your significant other about how exciting your day was when you realise they’re angry at you? Most of the time it’s something you did or forgot to do, combined with a stressful day which makes them act in a particular manner. Because of this you feel extremely guilty for having such a great day while they were going through hell.
I think it happens to everyone from time to time… And sometimes you can learn a lot from it. If you're lucky you might just learn one of your character flaws.
One of my character flaws is the failure to notice detail. I tend to look at the whole picture and forget to read between the lines. I must learn to be more careful.
Another one of my character flaws is trying to make everyone happy. I try hard to keep in contact with my friends who I don’t see as much anymore while juggling between my new friends, family time, studying Japanese and time for myself. Sometimes I feel as if I try so hard to remain friends with people but they don’t put in any effort. It’s just too tiring for me to always call, to always organise things that I know they will never go to and to reschedule my life so it doesn’t interfere with theirs when I try to arrange a meet up. It’s just so exhausting trying to make everyone happy and as Bill Cosby once said, "I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.”
Oscars night was yesterday (well two nights ago in the Northern Hemisphere) and I’m so glad that Memoirs of a Geisha won Achievement in Costume Design, Achievement in Cinematography and Achievement in Art Direction. Memoirs is perhaps one of the most aesthetically pleasing films I have ever seen. I’m also very happy that Brokeback Mountain won Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Score), Adapted Screenplay and Achievement in Directing because it sends such a powerful message. In the words of Ang Lee himself, “...Brokeback Mountain...taught all of us... so much about not just all the gay men and women whose love is denied by society, but just as important, the greatness of love itself.”
Now of course it's time for Mel’s top five best dressed women at the 78th Annual Academy Awards heehee. Champagne dresses seemed to be all the rage this year and most people pulled it off so well, looking stunningly elegant and sophisticated.
Five:
Hilary Swank in Versace. I think we all have an image of Swank as slightly boyish ever since her Oscar winning films Boys Don’t Cry and Million Dollar Baby, but this dress accentuates all her womanly curves adding a graceful femininity to her look.
Four:

Uma Thurman in Atelier Versace. My mouth dropped when I saw this tall, thin but beautifully proportioned woman come out and present an award. This dress complements her height so well as it falls in a way to make her limbs look even longer than they already are.
Three:

Jennifer Garner in Michael Kors. The colour of this dress is so amazing. Garner looks like she’s sparkling. I remember one of her-not-so-nice dresses in which her bust was pressed back in the dress so tight that it made her look like she had a boxy frame and huge arms. But this empire cut dress is definitely a hit for her.
Two:

Eugenia Silva in Armani Privée. It’s interestingly unusual for an Oscar dress, it’s suits her figure and with the pearls, not only does Silva look sexy she looks sophisticated as well.
One:

Jessica Alba in Versace. Donatella must be pleased on how much exposure her dresses are getting tonight. This dress wins top spot because Alba’s skin tone goes so well with the dresses' champagne tone. The embroidery all the way down the dress is so beautifully intricate in detail that it makes this dress appear simple but complicated at the same time.
